Hair grows from the root follicle, which is located under the skin. The blood vessels nourish the hair follicles and help in hair growth.

Hair growth goes through four stages:

  • Anagen or (Active hair growth phase)

  • Catagen or (Phase of transition from hair growth to "rest")

  • Telogen (resting phase)

  • Exogen (Dropout phase)

Hair color is due to the presence of melanin. Eumelanin and Pheomelanin are two types of melanin.

Eumelanin colors hair from brown to black. Pheomelanin turns hair from yellow-blonde to reddish-red. The color and shade of your hair is determined by the levels of these two melanins.

The cells that produce melanin are called melanocytes. They are present in hair follicles. Our hair begins to turn gray when melanocytes stop producing melanin.

ONION JUICE FOR GRAY HAIR

Research shows that gray hair is due to the natural buildup of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles. The main reason for this is age. The hair cells constantly produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, as it is a by-product of our body's processing of the oxygen we breathe.

However, as we age, the amount of hydrogen peroxide produced by hair cells increases. Thus, the hair begins to turn gray, and subsequently becomes completely white. To put it simply, your body begins to bleach your hair with hydrogen peroxide from the inside.

At a young age, our body successfully reproduces a natural enzyme - catalase. This enzyme, produced by our body, helps remove hydrogen peroxide from cells. When catalase levels are low, hydrogen peroxide levels are high. This affects the production of tyrosinase, another enzyme that produces melanin in hair follicles. Ultimately, all this leads to the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in our hair follicles.

Onion juice has been used for centuries to treat early gray hair. Onions are rich in catalase. As we saw earlier, gray hair results from a decrease in natural levels of catalase. Studies show that catalase, supplied with food from outside, neutralizes hydrogen peroxide and reduces the amount of gray hair. However, excess hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles leads to graying, brittleness and thinning of the hair.
