The healing properties of garlic are well known. Often associated with excellent cardiovascular benefits, this root vegetable is a key ingredient in soothing, warming soups and stews to help keep skin healthy and firm, all of which lead to radiant skin, reduced bloating, and a feeling of contentment .

USING GARLIC TO ACCELERATE NAILS GROWTH

While all sorts of folk remedies using garlic as the main ingredient have been around forever, they have yet to become popular. Why? All because of the garlic smell. This persistent and pungent smell is not to everyone's taste, especially when it comes from someone else😆😆😆

Côte co-founder, Mary Lennon, said they switched to garlic because they were able to create an odorless extract that had all the benefits for nail growth, but without the side effects like bad smell or yellowish nail coloration. According to Lennon, “Garlic is rich in selenium, minerals and nutrients that help the body stay healthy. The substances contained in garlic protect the body from damage caused by free radicals and infection, and, in addition to benefiting general health, help improve nail growth .”

We should not forget about its antifungal and antibacterial properties, which are also very useful for accelerating the growth of nails. Jamie Sheir, MD, says garlic's power is due to the fact that it contains over 200 naturally occurring chemical compounds. "As an antifungal drug, garlic is most effective in extract form," she said.

LARGE GARLIC CONSUMPTION MAY BE TOO DIFFICULT FOR THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

We know about the benefits of garlic when taken orally, but the digestive system of a large number of people cannot handle it well, and some even have garlic intolerance. At the same time, other people prefer not to use it for other reasons. Certified nutritionist, author and beauty expert Kimberly Snyder said she avoids this in her practice. “Using onions or garlic often makes a person hyperactive or restless. And beauty is not only the appearance, but also a complete state of calmness from the inside, and excitement and emotional instability can block the feeling of light and joy that is part of beauty. I felt more relaxed when I completely eliminated garlic from my diet,” Snyder said, “but it’s still not bad for topical use.”

Dr. Sheir agrees. "Often digestive symptoms are a barrier to large amounts of garlic taken orally, however, as a topical garlic can exert all of its beneficial medicinal properties and bypass many of the unwanted side effects," she said.

WHEN USING GARLIC TOPICALLY, BE SURE TO DO IT WITH CAUTION

Doctor, natural beauty expert and Osmia Organics founder Sarah Villafranco, MD, doubts this trend. “There are a lot of different stories on the Internet about rubbing garlic into your nails to make them grow faster. Maybe they helped someone, most likely because of the selenium content in raw garlic, ”she said. “In terms of medical evidence for garlic extract to promote nail growth, there is none, either internally or externally. In fact, if there is evidence at all, it is more negative. But not all medicines have been well researched and documented, so the best way to find out is to try it for yourself!"

However, garlic itself is an alkaline food and can cause skin soreness or burning, especially if there is any damage or cuts. The best product to try for nail health is garlic extract (and avoid bad odor at the same time).

“Applying pure garlic directly to the skin can cause a burn,” says Dr. Villafranco. “In most cases, it is very irritating to the skin. Don't get me wrong - there are tons of therapeutic uses for garlic, but applying garlic directly to the skin should be approached with caution," she said.

But if you still decide on the direct use of garlic, then you can moisten a cotton swab with water, then put a few drops of garlic juice on it and only then apply it to your nails. Always do a test patch first and soak your feet in warm water to hydrate your nails a little and minimize garlic smell.
